Collie Breeders
Responsible and devoted Collie breeders produce purebred dogs that correspond to the breed standard. Dogs with defects, which make them unsuited for the show ring and for breeding, make loving family pets. When you plan on purchasing a dog, think about what you want it for. As for the breed standard, it differs slightly in different registries. The AKC standard is used in the USA; in other countries, these dogs are bred according to the breed standards adopted by the local registries.
Prior to looking for Collie breeders, you should read the breed standard adopted in your area. According to the AKC breed standard, the Collie is a medium-sized dog, standing between 18 and 21 inches at the withers and weighing between 30 and 44 pounds. A purebred Collie should be well-balanced, graceful, and elegant. The head of the Collie is long and refined, without appearing massive. The eyes are dark in color and almond-shaped. The eyebrows are arched. The ears of the Collie break, if carried properly. In this breed, the body is longer than the wither height. The neck should be long and carried proudly upright. The long abundant coat is the main beauty of this breed. The undercoat of the Collie is soft and furry; the skin is not visible even when the hair is parted. The outer coat is straight and rough. On the mane, tail, and frills, the coat is longer.
True Collie breeders breed both for conformation and working abilities. Purebred Collies should be very intelligent and responsive to training. Since the primary purpose of the breed is herding, Collies are very self-assured and independent, but they like interactions with humans. Daily playing sessions and walks help form close bonds between a Collie and the owner.
It’s very difficult for a novice Collie owner to determine a dog of a high quality. If you are not sure you can tell a show quality Collie from a mongrel, ask an experienced owner, a vet, or a breed specialist for help. Even if you don’t plan to breed and show the dog, but want a Collie for the role of a family pet only, it should be healthy and well-behaved. Don’t trust Collie breeders that claim they produce only show quality dogs.
