Bearded Collie Breeders
Since the Collie is a very popular dog breed, there are many Bearded Collie breeders who produce dogs of this breed for profit only. It may be difficult to find a responsible and trustworthy breeder, if you have never owned a Collie and know little of this breed. For breeder references, it would be wise to contact a local breed club where all breeders in the area are registered. Kennels and breeders registered by the AKC, the Collie Club of America, and other organizations follow the code of ethic and produce high quality dogs that make good pets and show champions.
The main aim of responsible Bearded Collie breeders is improving the breed in general and selecting only the best dogs and bitches for breeding. Every litter in good kennels is bred for a specific purpose: for temperament, working abilities, or conformation. If a breeder claims that all puppies in the kennel are of a show quality, don’t trust him/her, because even carefully screened breeding stock cannot guarantee the highest quality of every puppy in a litter. On the other hand, if the breeder produces only pet quality dogs, he/she should not be trusted either, because a true specialist should strive to perfection of the bloodline and of the breed in general.
The temperament, trainability, and working abilities of a dog depend much on the first few weeks of its life. Puppies obtained from reputable Bearded Collie breeders are easy to housebreak and train than those purchased from puppy mills and backyard breeders. Adult dogs from serious breeders are usually provided with socialization and basic obedience training.
Responsible Bearded Collie breeders care for all their puppies and dogs and sell them only to families that are ready to provide the best possible care for a Collie. It happens that a family that owns a Collie has serious problems and cannot keep a pet any longer. In these cases, the breeder would be glad to take the dog back to save it from a rescue or a shelter. Backyard Bearded Collie breeders and puppy mills don’t care about their dogs after they have been sold.
